Albariño and Lagrein

Our sense of adventure is very much reflected in the choice of varieties planted. Our Albariño vines were the first planted in New Zealand. This variety is more commonly found in Galicia (NW Spain) and Northern Portugal (the Vinjo Verde region). It is noted for its distinctive aroma of apricot and peach, and full body combined with crisp acidity. It is a great seafood wine (our favourite: scallops and pancetta with mango salsa).

The first vintage was produced in 2012, immediately winning a Gold Medal at the London International Wine Challenge. The cooler vintage 2013 won Gold at the International Aromatic Wine Competition, establishing Stanley Albariño firmly at the forefront of the "new varieties"  movement in New Zealand.

Following on from this, we will be releasing our 2014 Lagrein around April 2015. This variety hails from the alpine Alto Adige region of North Italy. It is capable of delivering full bodied reds from sunny sites there - no matter what elevation. Characteristics include gutsy cherry fruit flavours and a slightly rustic edge in cooler years. The possibilities for this grape in the Awatere Valley interest us greatly.
